Sergeant Vernon West
Born. Leeds, 1887.
Killed in Action. 9/4/1917, Aged 30.
Vernon West, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J.T.West of 309 Roundhay Road, Leeds, enlisted with the "Pals" at Colsterdale in January 1915. After training at Colsterdale and Ripon, served in Egypt and France. Whilst at Colsterdale he obtained leave to marry his sweetheart, Marguerite (Madge) Ingram. They married on Wednesday 21st of July 1915 at St Aidan’s Church, Roundhay Road, Leeds. His best man for this occasion was also a "Pal" 15/816.Pte.T.Sissons of Oakwood, Leeds.
North Leeds News, Friday July 23rd 1915:
"Military Wedding at St Aidans.
On Wednesday afternoon at St Aidans Church, Roundhay Road, the marriage took place of Vernon West of the 15th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs.J.T.West of Leeds,To Miss Margurite Ingram, only daughter of Mr and Mrs.H.Ingram of Leeds. The bride was attended by two bridesmaids, Miss Constance Umpleby of Crossgates, Leeds and Miss Babs Newham, Leeds. Private T.Sissons, of the Leeds Pals acted as best man.The honeymoon will be spent in the Lake District."
Some time in 1916 Vernon was posted to the 9th Kings own Yorkshire Light Infantry as a Sergeant and it was with this Regiment that he was killed in action on the 9th of April 1917.
He lies in Cojeul British Cemetery, Pas-De-Calais, France.
