John and Percy Stephenson were the youngest of three children, two boys and a girl born to Clara and the late Harry Stephenson, Clara had been widowed at the age of 27, her late husband had been the landlord of the Sun inn on Kirkstall road Leeds and she had taken over the running of the pub.
Both boys enlisted on the 3rd of September 1914, and served with number 4 platoon of A company.
John became batman to Captain Stanley Neil second in Command of A Company, Percy the servant to Captain Phillip Mellor, the commander A Company.
They served together in Colsterdale Egypt and France.
Percy was killed in action in the 1st of July battle of the Somme 1916.
He has no known grave so is commemorated on thiepval memorial, France.
John survived the war and left the Army on the 2nd of March 1919.
