Private John Sydney Whitehead

Killed in action. 1st July 1916, Aged 20.
John Sydney Whitehead was the second son of Harry and Emily Whitehead of May Bank, Victoria Road Headingley, Leeds. His father being a partner in J.Whitehead & Son, Printers and Lithographers of Alfred Street, Leeds.
He was educated at Leeds Modern School and on leaving went into engineering. Both he and his brother Alfred joined the "Pals" on 4th of September 1914. After training at Colsterdale as a Platoon Bomber John proceeded to Egypt then France, and was killed in action on the first day of the Somme. Having no known grave he is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Arthur had been discharged on 5/5/1915 unfit for further service and survived the war.
