Killed in action France 21/9/1916 aged 20.

Ernest was the eldest of three boys born to William Markham Pape and his late wife Jane, she had died in 1893, this was the same time their youngest son Arnold was born.
A couple of years later William remarried, and over the next few years he and his new wife Catherine had 4 children one of whom died in infancy.

James was the eldest of these and the only boy, he enlisted underage on the 4th of September 1914, and served with the Pals as a bugler with number 6 platoon of B Company, at Colsterdale Egypt and France. He was killed by enemy shellfire in September 1916, and is buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France.

Ernest enlisted on the 3rd of September 1914 and served with the Pals as a Sergeant with number 9 platoon of C company,at Colsterdale Egypt and France, he survived the war being discharged on the 7th of March 1919.

William Markham Pape Jnr brother to the above was killed in action on 3rd of May 1917, serving with the 6th battalion west Yorkshire regiment, he as no known grave so is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
