Corporal Ernest Metcalfe Atkinson
Born. 1890, Headingley, Leeds.
Ernest Metcalfe Atkinson, the eldest child to George William Atkinson, a clothing manufacturer aged 43, and Mary Ann Atkinson, aged 42 was born at 40, Brudenell Mount, Headingley, Leeds, along with his sister Selina Dodsworth Atkinson aged 19 .
Ernest’s uncle Arthur Ernest Metcalfe, brother of George William Atkinson, was also a Leeds Pal however it is believed that due to his age was swiftly moved to the Labour corps where he stayed until the end of the war.
Ernest enlisted into 6 Section, 6 Platoon, B Company, 15th West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds Pals) on the 4th September 1914, where he attained the rank of Corporal.
Later in the war he was transferred to the Labour Corps very much like his uncle, as Private 28810.
