Killed in action France 1/7/1916.
Richard was one of seven children born to John and Ethel Matthews of 15, Clovelly Avenue, Hunslet Leeds.
He enlisted underage in early 1915, after training at Colsterdale he served with the Pals in Egypt and France.
He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1916, Sadly his body was never recovered but he his commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
